Standard of Engineering Education

The standard of Engineering graduates who pass out each year has also decreased substantially. This is due to the increased number of private Engineering colleges and increased number of seats.
Many of the Engineering graduates I know don’t even know to speak English properly. Many of them don’t know how to write a letter or application. It is funny how they pronounce certain words. You might be thinking why I’m telling all this stuff, which is not related to top 5 Engineering branches. Well, just look at the sorry state of our education.

Nowadays, just having an Engineering degree doesn’t guarantee you a job (with decent salary)! Look at those IT graduates who passed out from average ranked colleges. Many of them are still unemployed. They are forced to take up low salary jobs. Why does this happen? Well, they selected the wrong college and the wrong course. Yes, selecting the wrong Engineering course can land you in serious trouble. Now, if you have a degree in IT Engineering from a reputed college, you may easily bag a good job. But is different when it comes to average ranked colleges.

So, it becomes necessary to choose the best Engineering branch if you can’t make it to a premier college. This list is all about the top 5 Engineering branches available in India. If you want guaranteed job after graduation, then you must make sure that the course which you select is among the top and the best ones.

Best Engineering Courses & Branches

The number of Engineering branches have increased much in the last 10 years. There are so many new branches of Engineering being introduced that students are confused about which one to select! But what about the top Engineering branches? Wait, we will get to that point soon.
Here are the top 5 branches of Engineering. The list is in no particular order. I’ve formed this list after discussing with Engineering graduates of various branches from different colleges. Go through the list:

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

We are talking about the classic ‘Electrical Engineering’ here. This branch is one of the ‘Core Branches’ of Engineering. The course is tough and requires hard-work to score good marks. Most of the Engineering colleges in India offers this course. A new course based on Electrical Engineering has been introduced now. It is called Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It is also a good course.
Some of the important topics covered in this subject are- Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Machine Design, Power Systems, Control Theory, Power Electronics, Micro Controllers, Electromagnetism, Safety Management and Power Utilization. Along with theory classes, there also will be practical sessions. Lab sessions associated with this course are as important as the theory part!

After completing Undergraduate level B.E./B.Tech. Electrical Engineering program, graduates may go for PG technical course of M.E./M.Tech. Electrical Engineering. Various specializations are available, when it comes to the Master’s program! MBA is another top choice among graduates. Graduates may also go for short term technical courses such as wiring/piping technology. Such short term courses are job and industry oriented.

When it comes to job opportunities, this branch is an ‘evergreen branch’. It means that you will easily get jobs after graduating. Most of the big industries require Electrical Engineers. Government job opportunities are also excellent, when it comes to Electrical Engineering branch! So, this is a top course to pursue. Let us take a look at job types available in front of graduates-

§ Electrical Engineer
§ Plant Supervisor
§ Chief Engineer
§ Project Engineer
§ Consultant
§ Machine Designer

Private and Government organizations are known to be prime recruiters of Electrical Engineers. Some of them are-

§ BHEL
§ ONGC
§ DRDO
§ Indian Armed Forces
§ Panasonic
§ Godrej
§ Philips
§ TCS
§ Reliance Industries
§ Essar
§ Power Plants

We will introduce you another branch in our next issue.

A little advice on "which college and which branch"

If you’ve just finished your 12th standard, and are interested in getting an Engineering degree, which college, and which branch of Engineering to choose can seem like the most difficult, and at the same time, the most important decision of your life

The advice can be reduced down to this sentence:
Get into the best college (in a good city) that you can – whatever the branch.

Branch is not all that important

That’s right. Most students and parents seem to be very focused on getting in to the “best” branch (Computer Science, Electronics & Telecommunications, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, etc.) Everybody wants to get into the “top” branch. Everybody wants to know which branch has the best “scope” in the future.

This is misguided. There are a number of reasons why the branch doesn’t matter all that much:

§ If you study in a good college, all branches have “scope”.

There are successful businesses and well-paying jobs in all disciplines, including civil engineering, and chemical engineering. And the vast majority of computer science graduates in the country do not have decent jobs (because there are so many of them!) If you study in a bad college, a good branch is not going to help you. Also, so called “good” branches with lots of “scope” tend to be over-crowded, because everyone is entering that field. And finally, nobody really knows which branch will have the most “scope” 10 years from now.

 College does matter

The original IITs, and BITs Pilani, are clearly better than other engineering colleges. Most NITs are better than most state engineering colleges (except the top state colleges).
It’s fashionable to say the college doesn’t matter. Better colleges have better systems of education, better professors, and better “resume value” Also, in better colleges, you have better classmates.
If you are getting a not-so-good branch in a very good college, vs. a good branch in a not-so-good college, you should definitely choose the not-so-good branch in the very good college.
 City also matters

To a large extent, success in life is not simply about academic knowledge. It is also about a whole bunch of other factors – what we call “exposure”. This involves all kinds of things – like interactions with industry, various (non-academic) activities that you indulge in in a city, seeing the various interesting and different things that people are doing in the city, opportunities of getting involved in various initiatives, and generally “smartness” (as in “The Bombay exposure has really made him smart.”)

Also, please get out of your parents’ house. Stay in a hostel, or a rented flat with a bunch of your classmates, or something. That will propel you into the real world, give you some maturity, and the ability to deal with all kinds of issues that you need to deal with, when you are no longer staying under a protective cover provided by your parents. This is an important part of your education at this stage.

Popular courses after 10+2

Dr Gerald Pinto  Mail: gerrynid@gmail.com
Dean Faculty of Science and Placement Oficer, Milagres College Kallianpur

Every parent in India is worried and confused about choosing a course for their children after 10+2. Many parents dream to see their children become a doctor or an engineer. They become desperate if this dream of theirs is not fulfilled. But there are other better options other than these. The children should be allowed to make the choice of their education. A graduation degree in any field, be it engineering or medicine or any other, is not the ultimate goal of life. It is only a means to reach there. There are a lot of unemployed engineers or doctors today because they just chose what someone else wanted them to be. Everyone should give their goal a thought and accordingly choose the education stream after PUC. For most of the high level career in India in banking, insurance, railway, defence and civil services graduation is the minimum requirement. A BA graduate can become an IAS officer if he/she has determination, skill and capabilities. Communication skills, positive leadership qualities, literacy in computer are the other basic requirements.

Popular courses after 10+2

Museology, Clinical Psychology. Applied Psychology Public Administration, Public Relation, Rural Development, Visual Art, Women Studies.

Opportunities Commerce Students

Now in the globalised world ,where everything is commercialized, commerce and accountancy plays a major role hence there are lot of opportunities in this sector. Small businesses to corporate world require specialized people in finance and accounts. But in this field opportunities for higher education and research are limited. B Com and BBM are the courses commerce the students can opt for after 10+2.

Charted Accountant, Cost Accountants and company secretary are the prestigious and much demanded course which can be after PUC. But these courses are regular academic courses so can be pursued along with B Com or after B Com. Even though these courses are natural courses for commerce students, science students are also eligible to these. The students who want to be qualified as C A, Mathematics in PUC will help. Computer knowledge is also desirable. After the completion of the exam, they have to work as an article with a C A. It must also be remembered that pass percentage in All India level is less than 10%. At the post graduation level there are many specialized courses in finance, insurance, finance management, management ( MBA). Now a days demand to BBM is declining.

The Engineering study is one of the best and most soughed disciplines of academic education. It is growing with the development of nation, education, technology and research.
